Puss In Boots - Movie Review

Puss in Boots is the story of a cat. You know him from the Shrek movies and he is now starring in his very own feature film. Voiced by Antonio Banderas, Puss in Boots is ready to take on the adventures that created the legend we know today.

This movie has all the style, action, and humor you would hope for in a movie starring a swashbuckling and heroic heartthrob of a cat. Banished from the village he grew up in for a crime he did not commit, Puss in Boots has lived a life outside the law, but has held on to a dream from his childhood. This dream involves those famous magic beans that are the key to reaching the castle in the sky and the golden eggs hidden within.

The adventurous feline's quest involves reuniting with childhood friend turned sworn enemy Humpty Alexander Dumpty and also teaming up with the mysterious Kitty Soft Paws. This lovely black cat establishes herself as Puss's equal during a very memorable introduction that involves a combination of fighting and dancing. After the three form their unlikely alliance, they set off on a journey that will change each of their lives forever.

The animation in this feature is simply amazing with beautiful backdrops and highly detailed scenery throughout. The action is fast paced and both the fight scenes and dance routines are choreographed with buckets of style and a flair for the dramatic. You can tell the creators of this film really wanted to incorporate the classic Saturday matinee style of film making that brings back memories of Errol Flynn movies and tales of Zorro.

Puss in Boots sticks to the way the Shrek movies are able to re-imagine classic fairy tale characters where both kids and adults can enjoy the many layers of humor. The film as a whole is family friendly, but there are definite nods to the more mature crowd that will see this movie with bits of innuendo and interesting takes on aged versions of characters like Jack from the famed Beanstalk tale.

The 3D was very well done and animated films such as this one prove to be the ideal format for the technology. There are moments where swords and other various items seem to jump out of the screen at you, but its not overplayed and is always within the context of the story. There is also a very rich depth added to the already striking visual style by the 3D that I think would really be missed without it.

Puss in Boots is surprisingly entertaining and I would highly recommend this to anyone as a can't miss theater experience. Check out the trailer below as well as a "purrfect" Puss in Boots version of the popular Old Spice commercial.

This is my cat. His name is Flash. Apparently, he is a movie star.
