2011 People's Choice: Top 20 Movies

A recent poll posted on this blog's Facebook page was used to determined what were the most popular movies of 2011 with responses being submitted mostly by readers of my blog. The results are listed below and I'm sure you will find more than a few surprises.

The list is ranked top to bottom by number of votes received. One simple question was asked without any specific determining factors and that question was "What were your favorite movies of 2011?".

  1. X-Men: First Class
  2. Transformers: Dark of the Moon
  3. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II
  4. Fast Five
  5. The Adjustment Bureau
  6. Bridesmaids
  7. Thor
  8. Captain America: First Avenger
  9. Limitless
  10. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
  11. Rise of the Planet of the Apes
  12. Cars 2
  13. The Help
  14. Hanna
  15. Friends with Benefits
  16. The Muppets
  17. Puss in Boots
  18. The Hangover 2
  19. Battle: Los Angeles
  20. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

At First Glance:
The first thing that jumps out at me about these results is that movies with a colon (the punctuation, not the body part) in the title seemed to have a decided advantage as you will find one included in seven of the top twenty movie's titles and even all three at the top of the list.

No other type of punctuation has ever come close to this level of domination and the results seem to be indicative of a new trend. It will be interesting to see if movie studios take note of this and start including colons in more and more of their releases.

Overall, the list mirrors the national box office results although it is interesting that 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part 1' finished nowhere near the top 20...and it even has two colons in the title!

Biggest Surprises:
I would say the biggest surprises for placement on this list are 'The Adjustment Bureau' at number five, 'Limitless' at number nine, and 'Hanna' at number fourteen. I didn't think many people would have remembered 'Limitless' or 'The Adjustment Bureau' as they both were released early in the year and I didn't know very many people actually saw 'Hanna', which I thought was a great movie. Also, I was very surprised that 'Super 8' did not receive any votes at all.

Biggest Disappointment:
Unfortunately, 'The Artist', hands down one of the best movies of the year, only received three votes which means people really need to get out there to see this amazing movie.

In Conclusion:
There you have it folks, the top 20 movies of 2011 as voted by you. Thank you very much to those that participated and we look forward to another year of watching movies at our local theaters.

  1. I've never heard of Hanna, but some of those really surprised me...and disappointed me.
