'Inception' is a movie directed by Christopher Nolan and features an all star cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Caine, Ken Watanabe, Cillian Murphy, and Marion Cotillard and features a story unlike anything you have ever seen.
The group is tested and then hired by a man named Saito (Watanabe) although his plan is not to extract information, but to have them plant an idea in to a rival business man's subconscious that, if successful, will give his company an undeniable advantage within their industry. Cobb assembles the best people he can find for this job including a promising college student named Ariadne (Page) who is brought in and trained to be the architect of the dream locations they will be using.
Reluctant at first, she sees the amazing potential of what she can accomplish and is quickly drawn in even as she see how Cobb is being dangerously affected within their shared dream state by a mysterious woman who turns out to be his wife (Cotillard).
To go any further in to the story would be pointless as there are so many layers and so much depth to the story and how the dream world clashes with reality that I would end up getting lost trying to explain even half of it.
That's not to say that watching the movie is overly confusing, it all makes good sense as the story progresses, but you really do need to pay attention throughout and I highly recommend watching more than once to be able to take it all in.
Christopher Nolan has received an endless amount of praise for his previous work and especially for 'The Dark Knight' which far surpassed any expectations thanks in large part to a brilliantly designed story that had so many twists and turns, they literally kept you on the edge of your seat. 'Inception' takes that mind bending formula and takes it even farther as time, space, objects, and people are all treated in an entirely different manner while within a shared subconscious.
The overall presentation of the characters is very well thought out and each of them is grounded with a sense of believability that is impressive considering how dynamic and stylized the movie turns out to be. I was very impressed with Tom Hardy in a breakout role as Eames, the always superb Ellen Page, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Arthur, who gets to be involved in one of the coolest fight scenes ever filmed.
On top of that we get yet another stellar performance from Leonardo DiCaprio as he portrays a man in Cobb that is dealing with so much internal struggle from circumstances that are revealed over the course of the movie and balances that with a sense of purpose that drives the man to achieve whatever needs to be done so that he can get back to a family that has been waiting on his return for far too long.
As if great acting and a mind blowing story wasn't enough, the film is also full of amazing special effects work that complements the story in ways that you just have to see to believe. Combine all of that with a director that continues to take movie-making to new heights and you end up with an experience that is truly beyond comparison.
