"Lola Versus" is a very well written and perfectly cast story about a young woman who's life suddenly falls apart just as she thinks it may have reached perfection. From this point forward we see the not so young 20-something struggle to come to terms with love, friendship, family, and most importantly herself.
At the beginning of the movie, we see Lola and her boyfriend Luke enjoying each other in every way as their relationship progresses from dating to living together and eventually to being engaged. The happiness they share seems completely flawless until Luke suddenly breaks the engagement and ends the relationship.
Caught completely by surprise, Lola is sent in to a potato chip and alcohol fueled downward spiral that is only slowed by the ever present support from her parents and her best friends Alice and Henry. Even so, Lola manages to make just about every mistake one can make when in such a distraught frame of mind and heart although it is times like this where a person can truly learn who they are.
The journey that Lola takes is what makes this movie special as every scene and every emotion seem so true to real life and not like something you feel like you've already seen a million times. While watching her and her friends and family interact, I really felt like these were real people having real conversations, making real mistakes.
There is just as much comedy in "Lola Versus" as there is drama and I can pretty much guarantee that some part of this movie will reach you deep down on an emotional level. There isn't much not to like about this movie and especially when you throw in a truly remarkable performance by Greta Gerwig as Lola, it really doesn't get much better.
"Lola Versus" was written and directed by Daryl Wein and stars Greta Gerwig, Joel Kinnaman, Zoe Lister Jones, and Hamish Linklater with special appearances by Bill Pullman and Debra Winger.
