2 Days In New York - Movie Review

Julie Delpy is the writer, director, and star of "2 Days in New York" which is a sequel to her 2007 effort "2 Days in Paris". This movie takes a look at how relationships and dysfunctional families can come crashing in to one another by taking a peek in to the lives of a New York couple during a very interesting point in their lives.

Marion (Delpy) and Mingus (Chris Rock) have adjusted to life as a couple quite nicely and even the added pressure of bringing each of their own children in to the relationship has caused nothing more than minor disruption. What they have not been expecting is having their world turned upside down by the arrival of Marion's very unique family from Paris just as she is preparing for a major exhibition of her photography.

If you look at the expression on Chris Rock's face in the poster for the movie, it pretty much sums up the look I had on my face while watching. Its a look of "What the heck am I doing here and how do I get away from it?!" which is how I felt for most of the what felt like a much longer hour and a half running time. Sure there were some sweet moments and a few genuine laughs, but overall I felt this movie was just a mess of bad jokes and poorly executed ideas.

I can truly see what this movie is trying to be, but it just didn't hit the mark for me at all. The entire cast just came off as unlikable and annoying with the exception of Rock who seemed to be trying his best but still struggling with a role he never seemed comfortable in. Even after making an honest effort to like a story that seemed to make less and less sense as it continued to play out, I found that my favorite part was when the credits began to roll and it was time to let these "2 days in New York" fade away as quickly as possible.
