Rawson Marshall Thurber, the writer and director of Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, is back with another comedy although instead of balls, we get strippers and drugs! We're the Millers features a talented cast including Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Nick Offerman, Ed Helms, Will Poulter, Emma Roberts, and Kathryn Hahn.
David Clark (Sudeikis) has been a small time pot dealer in Denver for much longer than he ever hoped, but his mildly criminal yet comfortable lifestyle has given him no reason to ever change his ways. After an attempted good deed turns into a stroke of misfortune resulting in the loss of his entire inventory and every penny he has invested into his business, his supplier Brad Gurdlinger (Helms) makes him an offer of redemption that he is forced to accept. The task given to David is the seemingly simple errand of picking up just a "smidge" of pot from an associate located across the Mexican border and then bringing it back to Brad's base of operations back in Denver. Easy enough, right?
In an attempt at coming up with a way to get across the border without any suspicions being aroused by the border patrol, David recruits a few people to join him on this quest. Reluctantly joining together as the Miller family are David himself, down on her luck stripper Rose O'Reilly (Anniston), serial runaway Casey Mathis (Roberts), and nerdy teen neighbor Kenny Rossmore (Poulter). With his team fully assembled and properly disguised in polo shirts, sensible shoes, and a Winnebago to travel in, he heads off on an adventure that will go way beyond running a simple errand for a big time drug supplier.
The basic premise of this movie as described above is one that could really swing either direction when it comes to being either a classicly hilarious comedy or a tragically unfunny flop of a movie. One of the main reasons this movie swings towards the positive is a truly funny cast of characters that all bring their A game including standout performances by Will Poulter as the constantly confused Kenny and Nick Offerman as fellow traveller Don Fitzgerald who, along with his wife Edie (Hahn) has a few secrets of his own to reveal before its all said and done.
Thurber once again proves he has a knack for delivering a steady stream of gut busting gags and side splitting skits that all fit together nicely in a fast paced story that barely gives you enough time to catch your breath between belly laughs. Sure, there is time spent on character development and plot progression as any movie needs, but its all handled very well within the context of a movie that's main purpose is to keep you laughing from beginning to end. There's even a great gag reel that plays as the credits roll and it gives you the idea that this movie was just as much fun for the cast and crew to make as it was for the audience to watch. Seriously, some of the biggest laughs are in this reel...and that's saying something given how funny the movie itself is.
Did I mention that Jennifer Aniston puts on a strip show that will have men of all ages (and most women, too) glued to the screen? This timeless beauty shows why she's still on top of her game in more ways than one and, like any great entertainer, leaves you wanting even more when its all said and done. If that doesn't make you want to see We're the Millers then I don't know what will. Bottom line, this is a genuinely funny movie with great comedic performances and a solid story so go check it out and be ready to have a great time.
