Cheap Thrills (SIFF 2013) - Movie Review

Cheap Thrills is a movie directed by newcomer E.L. Katz. The story was written by David Chirchirillo and Trent Haaga and stars Pat Healy, Ethan Embry, David Koechner, and Sara Paxton.

Craig (Healy) is down on his luck and in serious need of a way to come up with money enough to keep his family from being evicted from their home. To make matters worse he has just been fired from his job so the natural thing to do is stop by the nearest bar for a quick drink before trying to come up with a seemingly impossible solution. After reuniting with his old friend Vince (Embry), the two are approached by Violet (Paxton) and Colin (Koechner), a partying couple who have a very intriguing offer that could change both of their lives forever.

What I loved about this movie is that it tells you right away what type of movie it is trying to be and then delivers on that promise in spades. You will be shocked by what you see in this movie. You will also laugh, cheer, freak out, and maybe even shed a few tears for one reason or another. First time director E.L. Katz absolutely knocks this one out of the park and, while the subject matter may not be for everyone, those looking for a roller coaster ride filled with shock and awe will not be disappointed in any way.

Cheap Thrills can be broken down as a case study in what a human being is capable of achieving given desperate circumstances and it does actually stand up under that type of scrutiny. I suppose this is why I hold the film in such high regard. Its not just gratuitous for the sake of being gratuitous, there is an actual story to be told as well. No, I'm not saying the movie is going to rake in a pile of Oscars, but it will take you on one hell of a ride that you won't soon forget.
