Noah is the creation of acclaimed director Darren Aronofsky and tells the biblical tale of a man tasked with saving the creatures of the world from God's wrath. Russell Crowe plays the title role alongside Jennifer Connelly, Ray Winstone, Anthony Hopkins, and Emma Watson.
If you have any passing knowledge of the bible then you are familiar with the story of Noah. As the creator prepares the cleanse the earth, he tells Noah to build a boat, load it up with all the animals of the world, and hold on tight as he lets loose a whole bunch of water. This movie tells that story although it takes some twists and turns that I really was not expecting.
If you look at this movie as more of a fantasy piece along the lines of The Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones it might make more sense. This will prepare you for the magical fire stones and fallen angels who are now rock monsters that help to fill the over two hours of movie that is derived from 3 chapters of the book of Genesis. To be honest I was very confused as to what was going on and found myself wondering why all of this was happening. I don't believe one character in the story was capable of making a rational decision and the sort of evil Tubal-cain, played by Ray Winstone, seemed to be there just to create a villain for Noah to do battle with...sort of.
The story was just weird, the acting across the board was downright terrible, and most surprisingly of all, Aronofsky seemed to have no clue what he was doing. Noah himself was very unlikable and his actions were pretty single minded when what was needed was a depth and purpose that didn't come across in any way shape or form. To top it all off, Noah turned out to be more of an environmental warning than anything else. Because using the bible to remind us all how mankind is pretty much ruining the planet we live on is a great idea...or something.
