Godzilla - Movie Review

The "King of Monsters" is back with an all new story and upgraded special effects and a plan to stomp on this summer's blockbuster competition. Godzilla was directed by Gareth Edwards and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olson, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, and David Strathairn.

It's 1999 and Joe Brody (Cranston) should be celebrating his birthday, but he is too busy poring over a series of abnormal seismic readings he has been investigating. When his warnings are ignored, the nuclear plant he works for becomes ground zero for the uprising of something truly remarkable although, for Joe, it has devastating results. With a portion of the city and his wife lost forever, he becomes obsessed, even years later, with figuring out exactly what caused such an event to occur.

Dr. Ishiro Serizawa (Watanabe) was in charge of the Janjira nuclear plant when stuff got crazy and has been, along with his assistant Vivienne (Hawkins), monitoring similar activity in an attempt to keep it from happening again. Unfortunately, history is destined to repeat itself and another disaster is already on the way and this time there is no hiding the fact that dormant monsters are about to rise up and wreak havoc on whatever ends up in their path. As valiantly as man tries to stop them, there may only be one force on the planet that has the ability to bring down gigantic radioactive monsters and that would be the one and only king of monsters...Godzilla.

We have all been waiting for a decent Godzilla movie for a long time and now I believe we finally have it. Director Gareth Edwards has put together an impressive monster movie filled with awesome special effects and a story worthy of the legendary lizard. Sure, if you really want to be picky the movie does have its faults, but all I was really looking for was some eye popping visuals and some bad ass fight scenes between gigantic, radioactive creatures and Godzilla absolutely delivers the goods.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson has the lead role in this movie if only because he has the most screen time as Joe Brody's son Ford. I'm a fan of Elizabeth Olson so I was disappointed to see her in only a few brief scenes and Sally Hawkins, coming off her Oscar nominated role in Blue Jasmine, really has nothing to do except agree with Watanabe's character and look either curious or shocked. Bryan Cranston and Ken Watanabe each dominate whatever scenes they are in, which is expected, but it would have been nice to see more of them although, like I said before, no need to be picky because...monsters!

Yeah, this movie is all about gigantic monsters on a big movie screen with lots of loud noises, flashy special effects, and a few show stopping moments that will leave a trails of jaws dropped on movie theater floors everywhere. Godzilla is a really fun time that you absolutely have to see in a movie theater to fully appreciate so please do not wait for this to come out on video. Go see it right now because...Monsters!
