Blackhat - Movie Review

Blackhat is a cyber terrorist, hacker thriller directed by Michael Mann whose previous work includes The Last of the Mohicans, Heat, The Insider, and Collateral. The movie stars Chris Hemsworth, Leehom Wang, Wei Tang, Viola Davis, and John Ortiz.

Nick Hathaway (Hemsworth) is a computer expert who is in prison for doing bad things with computers...at least until a cyber terrorist starts using hacker code to do worse things around the world. A joint task force that includes American and Chinese operatives allows Hathaway to join them as he is pretty much the only guy capable of figuring out what the bad guys are doing. While they are all out trying to catch the bad guys, Hathaway can't help but do bad things too and, even though they are with good intentions, he ends up causing more bad stuff which eventually leads to a showdown between him and the bad guy hacker person. Meanwhile Hathaway's former college roommate's little sister is now a beautiful young woman and they like each other a whole bunch.

While the idea of this movie is pretty good, Michael Mann ends up putting out a complete and total mess of a story that, by the end, has completely fallen apart with no hope of redemption. The best part about this movie is that it does mercifully come to an end although not nearly soon enough. What we are subjected to in the mean time is a bunch of sloppy acting, horrible plot devices, action scenes that are just laughable, and a climactic scene that is supposed to be really tense and exciting, but ends up just being real weird and very pointless. I believe the biggest mistake here was in casting Hemsworth as a character who is troubled, angry, and really not a very good person at all. Leehom Wang and Wei Tang are actually pretty decent in their roles as brother and sister, but they really aren't given much to work with and are ultimately wasted in a movie that goes nowhere.

Please, whatever you do, stay away from this movie...unless all you want to do is look at pretty faces doing stuff on a movie screen, then okay...be my guest. You have been warned.
