Inherent Vice is a movie written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and is based off the novel which was written by Thomas Pynchon. There's a whole bunch of actors and actresses in the movie including Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro, Own Wilson, Katherine Waterston, Eric Roberts, Maya Rudolph, Michael Kenneth Williams, Jena Malone, Martin Short, and Reese Witherspoon.
Larry "Doc" Sportello (Phoenix) is a private investigator who finds himself mixed up in all kinds of trouble after his ex girlfriend Shasta Fay Hepworth (Waterston) asks him to help her out with a bit of a situation she has found herself in. Doc ends up becoming entangled with real estate moguls, black panthers, drug lords, crooked cops, and FBI agents, all of whom would probably prefer to see him taken out of the picture.
I really did not like this movie. Other than a few scattered entertaining moments here and there, the whole thing was very slow and uninteresting. I see what Anderson was trying to do, a drug fueled mixture of Pulp Fiction and L.A. Confidential, but none of it worked very well at all. Conversations between characters carried on way too long and became almost painful to watch while the rest of it was just a mess of weird scenarios and wacky plot twists. I suppose this will be one of those films that people say "You just don't get it", but frankly I could really care less. This movie took up two and a half hours of my life that I really wish had been spent doing something else.
