The Lazarus Effect - Movie Review

The Lazarus Effect is a movie directed by David Gelb who's previous work includes the highly acclaimed documentary, Jiro Dreams of Sushi. The film stars Olivia Wilde, Mark Duplass, Sarah Bolger, Evan Peters, Donald Glover, and Rocky the Dog.

Frank and Zoe have been working with their team of medical students on creating a way to bring animals back to life in hopes of applying the science to the medical industry. After Zoe is accidentally killed during an unauthorized test, Frank decides to make her the ultimate test subject by attempting to bring her back from the dead. After that, lots of scary stuff starts to happen.

This movie really doesn't do anything to advance the horror genre although it doesn't really hurt it either. It's just sort of there. The whole thing is filled with classic movie clichés like flickering lights, scares that turn out to be jokes, creepy animals, kind of creepy little girl, and so on and so forth. Oddly enough, its most redeeming quality is the short run time which clocks in at about one hour and fifteen minutes. More horror movies should follow this example and just get to the point of the story without lots of unnecessary dialog and plot development.

The Lazarus Effect is not the best movie you could see and it is certainly not the scariest although it does manage to entertain and everyone involved seems to understand what they are a part of. If you like horror movies, I would say check this out although casual fans should probably look for other options.
