It Follows is a throwback horror movie written and directed by newcomer David Robert Miller. The film stars Maika Monroe, Jake Weary, Lili Sepe, Olivia Luccardi, Daniel Zovatto, and Keir Gilchrist.
The Story:
Jay (Monroe), a teenage girl, falls for mysterious young man named Hugh (Weary) who ends up using her to get rid of a curse. After they have sex, he tells her about the curse which includes being chased by a silent, walking being who will stalk her, hunt her down, and kill her unless she has sex with someone else to pass along the curse. The god news is, the being can only walk. The bad news is, it can take the form of anyone she knows to lure her into being captured and killed. Jay eventually enlists the help of her friends to find a way out of this terrible and strange predicament.
The Review:
I wasn't expecting much from this movie as the premise seems pretty silly and every indication would make you think this was going to be a horribly put together piece of B-Movie trash. In a very strange way it's all of these things yet still; manages to be a really entertaining and fun movie with a few scares and lots of tension. Director David Robert Miller manages to fill his story with an underlying and inevitable sense of dread that the audience can feel just as much as the characters. Even though you know the ghost/monster/thing is miles away and only has the ability to walk at a very leisurely pace, you are very well aware that it will absolutely show up at some point and you don't want to be there when it does.
Maika Monroe does a solid job taking over the lead role in this movie and, combined with her breakout performance in last year's The Guest, I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot more of her down the road and she has a good chance at becoming a staple in the genre.
It's hard to describe why this movie works, it just does. Fans of horror will appreciate the throwback visual style and soundtrack both of which just scream 70's all the way around. It Follows is a fun movie that is sure to become a late night staple on various cable channels and hopefully at least one sequel will be heading our way soon.
