Unfriended - Movie Review

Unfriended is a social media based horror movie directed by Levan Gabriadze and was written by Nelson Greaves. This supernatual revenge thriller stars Heather Sossaman, Matthew Bohrer, Courtney Halverson, Shelley Hennig, Moses Jacob Storm, Will Peltz, Renee Olstead, and Jacob Wysocki.

The Story:
One year after a high school student kills herself over an embarrassing video that was put on the internet, a group of her classmates find themselves trapped on a Skype call together by an unidentified user. Eventually, the group realize who they think is just a harmless internet troll, might actually be their past literally coming back to haunt them.

The Review:
The unique thing about this movie is that it is presented entirely from the perspective of one of the kid's laptop screens and mostly involves the group video chat. I've seen this technique used before in a segment of the original V/H/S anthology called "The Sick Thing That Happened to Emily When She was Younger" and, while it was very effective in that particular short film, it didn't translate as well to a full length feature. After a while, the story just became redundant and predictable so I found myself only looking forward to how each of the kids would be knocked off but even that led to further disappointment.

Unfriended just doesn't hit the mark on any of the concepts or ideas they were aiming for yet there is just enough there to make it tolerable. Thanks in part to some pretty good performances turned in by a young, unknown cast, and partially thanks to a mercifully short run time of 82 minutes, the movie still manages to be an entertaining bit of horror so, if you're into the genre, I would say go ahead and give it a chance.
