A Hard Day, written and directed by Seong-hoon Kim, is an official selection of the 2015 Seattle International Film Festival. This South Korean action thriller stars Seon-gyun Lee, Man-shik Jeong, Jin-woong Jo, Dong-Young Kim, and Dong-mi Shin.
The Story:
When it comes to having bad days, detective Go Geon-soo (Seon-gyun Lee) doesn't mess around. On the night of his mother's funeral, he accidentally runs over and kills a man who just happens to be a high stakes criminal. Oh, and did I mention his department is being investigated by the IAD for embezzlement, his received a divorce notice from his wife, and there's a mysterious man claiming to have witnessed the accident he is trying to cover up?
The Review:
You would think that with all the bad stuff happening to the lead character that this could easily be a dark and gritty drama which would be very much in line with the tendencies of South Korean cinema. Instead, Seong-hoon Kim has decided to give us a fun, action adventure with just the right amount of comedy mixed in to make for a thoroughly entertaining movie. Go Geon-soo, played perfectly by Seon-gyun Lee, is by no means the classic noble hero as we learn right away that he is involved in corruption although the mindset that he will do anything to survive, even if it means hiding a body in some very unusual places, is what allows his character to thrive during this ordeal.
The Verdict:
A Hard Day is a very entertaining movie that doesn't pull any punches when it comes to hard hitting action and keeps you rolling with some genuinely funny comedic moments.
