Cub (SIFF 2015) - Movie Review

Cub is a backwoods horror movie from Belgium and is an official selection of the 2015 Seattle International Film Festival. The movie was written and directed by Jonas Govaerts and stars Maurice Luijten, Evelien Bosmans, Titus De Voogdt, and Gill Eeckelaert.

The Story:
Sam (Luijten) and his fellow scout troop members are off to a camping expedition in a forest area rumored to be haunted by a mysterious werewolf creature. When the rumors prove to contain some measure of truth, the camping trip becomes more about survival than simply spending time with nature.

The Review:
Jonas Govaerts does a really good job creating a movie that contains all the classic elements you could ask for from the genre including some real creepy moments in the forest at night and some pretty brutal punch, punch, stab action scenes. There's even a token peeping-tom, partially nude shower scene that is pretty much a hallmark of classic cabin in the woods style horror movies as well. The one area I felt was lacking, and maybe this was just me not catching a few details, but I thought the back story that lead to some of the stuff we see in the third act could have been fleshed out more. Minor details, but nothing that would come close to derailing such a fun movie.

The Verdict:
Cub is a very well crafted horror movie that features lots of good scares, some decent action, and an overall entertaining story. Fans of the genre should be very satisfied with the effort put in by cast and crew and this is definitely a movie I would recommend.
