Deathgasm is a horror comedy from New Zealand written and directed by Jason Lei Holden. The movie, which stars Milo Cawthorne, James Blake, Kimberly Crossman, Delaney Tabron, and Sam Berkley is an official selection of the 2015 Seattle International Film Festival and is part of the festival's Midnight Adrenaline series.
The Story:
Brodie and Zakk (Cawthrone and Blake) are high school students who are seen as outcasts for their love of heavy metal. After searching for and discovering the hideout of a former metal icon, they find themselves in possession of sheet music that, when played, could bring about the destruction of their town by releasing an ancient evil demon. Meanwhile, a group of worshipers are hoping to claim the sheet music for their own so they can be the ones who usher in the impending era of darkness. Only Brodie, Zakk, and their beautiful classmate Medina (Crossman) stand in the way of demons, zombies, and pretty much the end of mankind.
The Review:
Deathgasm is the latest in what is becoming an 80's throwback trend within the horror genre and follows in the footsteps of films like Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland while paying homage to the early works of Peter Jackson and Sam Raimi. Jason Lei Holden has put together a genuinely entertaining film filled with comedy, action, and bucket loads of gore. I do have to say there were a few moments where I thought the whole thing might fall off the rails from an overload of absurdity, but the cast and crew exercised just enough restraint to keep that from happening.
The Verdict:
Deathgasm is a fun movie that is destined to end up having a long life as a cult classic that people watch over and over. If you grew up in the 80's, there is a ton of stuff to love about this film and especially if you are a fan of that era's heavy metal culture and imagery. For fans of 80's horror films and creature features, this movie gets just about everything right.
