Temporary Family is a Chinese comedy written and directed by Cheuk Wan Chi and starring Sammi Cheng, Nick Cheung, Oho, Angelababy, and Dayo Wong. The movie is also an official selection of the 2015 Seattle International Film Festival.
The Story:
Hong Siu Lung (Cheung - Nightfall) is a property agent who finds himself needing to raise his financial status before his girlfriend will accept his marriage proposal. With a plan in place he recruits his daughter in law Hak (Angelababy), recently divorced Charlotte (Cheng), and his well to do intern Very Wong (Oho) to go in on a property deal that is sure to bring him the profit he needs. Of course, things don't always go as planned and, in a volatile market, this temporary arrangement may not be as solid of an investment as they might have thought although the lessons they learn might end up being more profitable to their lives than any amount of money.
The Review:
Cheuk Wan Chi has put together a very funny comedy with a cast that has the ability to pull of everything some slapstick and one liners to the more serious and emotional parts of the story. While it is a very entertaining movie, it is also a bit of a bumpy ride when it comes to piecing together all of them themes and individual stories that need to play out. The focus is on Hong and Charlotte, which is fine although I would have liked to have seen more of Hak's and Very's story fleshed out as well. There seems to have been a lot left on the table in the rush to get through the hour and half run time and even the themes of financial status and cultural pressure are never quite fully realized.
The Verdict:
Temporary Family is a fun movie to watch although is nothing more than a temporary diversion and will most likely not leave much of a lasting impression. To the credit of everyone involved, I imagine the goal in creating this film wasn't as much to try and change the world as it was to simply entertain and they definitely succeeded in that regard.
