Turbo Kid is a co-production between New-Zealand and Canada created by film makers François Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell. The movie, an official selection of the 2015 Seattle International Film Festival, features acting performances by Munro Chambers, Laurence Leboeuf, Michael Ironside, Edwin Wright, and Aaron Jeffery.
The Story:
In 1997, the earth has been reduced to a barren apocalyptic wasteland, covered in nothing but desert and a limited supply of water contaminated by years of acid rain. A young boy, who has been surviving off the land by scavenging anything of value, discovers something straight out of his favorite comic book, is befriended by an odd young woman, and then finds himself caught in the middle of an all out war over who controls the last remaining source of water.
The Review:
With 1980's pop culture becoming the latest decade to reach trend status, it's nice to see indie film makers taking advantage of the opportunity to make low budget features that pay homage to that most interesting era of cinema. The creative team of François Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell have put together a really fun trip through the way back machine which instantly brings back matinee memories of films like Mad Max, Flash Gordon, Ice Pirates, Krull, and even a little Indiana Jones thrown in for good measure. Oh, and remember in Kill Bill when The Bride takes down the Crazy 88's in a blood splattering battle for the ages? There's tons of slicing, dicing, chopping, and hacking going on in this movie, too so be prepared!
The four primary cast members are each spot on in their roles as we have Munro Chambers as the reluctant young hero, Aaron Jeffery as the aging hero, Michael Ironside as the crazed villain, and Laurence Leboeuf as the quirky female companion who steals just about every scene she is in. Anyone who has spent any time watching 80's action movies from Scanners to Top Gun should be more than excited to see Mr. Ironside taking on yet another memorable miscreant as he has made a career out of playing evil henchmen and bad ass bad guys.
The Verdict:
Turbo Kid is like totally rad...or to quote a more modern phrase: Nailed it! This is definitely a movie worth seeing whether you are a fan of the genre or not and I am really hoping we get to see more adventures of Turbo Kid down the road.
