Steve Jobs is a biopic directed by Danny Boyle and is based off the book written by Walter Isaacson. The film stars Michael Fassbender, Kate Winslet, Seth Rogen, Jeff Daniels, Michael Stuhlbarg, Katherine Waterston, John Ortiz, and Adam Shapiro.
The Story:
This film covers three major events in the life of Steve Jobs (Fassbender), each being the major product launches for the Macintosh, Next, and the industry changing iMac. During these major events, Jobs is forced to deal with major personal issues just as he is ready to go on stage. What he learns from these interactions and how he handles them ultimately helps to shape what type of man he becomes and how he is viewed by both family and peers.
The Review:
Honestly, I was expecting a lot more from this movie. This was supposed to be the definitive opportunity to tell the story of one of the most important men in American history and what we get is the man basically having the same argument with the same people three times and then the movie is over. Sure, there is a progression and we see how Jobs and the people around him change, but that's bound to happen with so much time elapsing between each event and putting so much weight into these very specific moments makes the whole thing feel very contrived over dramatized. The one thing that really makes this film worth watching is the quality of acting on display and is highlighted by Kate Winslet who delivers one of the best performances of her career.
The Verdict:
Steve Jobs is the type of film that will garner lots of attention from the awards circuit but will struggle gaining any momentum at the box office, mainly because it's just not that entertaining of a story. See this movie if you want to watch some really fine actors flex their proverbial acting muscles, otherwise I would skip it as there are so many better options out there.
