They Look Like People (TFF 2015) - Movie Review

They Look Like People, a mystery thriller written and directed by Perry Blackshear, is an official selection of the 2015 Tacoma Film Festival. The film stars MacLeod Andrews, Evan Dumouchel, Margaret Ying Drake, Mick Casale, and Elena Greenlee.

The Story:
Wyatt (Andrews) has been having some problems with voices in his head telling him that humanity is being taken over by evil creatures and he is one of the only people who can see them and potentially stop this subversive threat. Even though he is told to trust no one, Wyatt seeks out the help of child hood friend Christian (Dumouchel) in hopes that he can help him from feeling like he is going insane.

The Review:
Going into seeing this movie at the Tacoma Film Festival, I really wasn't sure what to expect other than it looked pretty creepy and more than a little scary. While there wasn't a ton of scares, director Perry Blackshear did a great job putting together a psychological thriller that keeps you guessing up until the very end. The dark and muted color pallet used in this film helps to create a sense that what we are seeing isn't really the reality we are living in and it actually helps the audience to get into Wyatt's head although that may or may not be a good thing. On one hand, you can definitely tell this is a low budget, indie production although Blackshear really does get the most out of every penny that was put into its creation and the cast gives their best effort as well.

The Verdict:
They Look Like People is a very cool concept and has some really great moments although I felt like it ultimately falls a little flat and could have been much more than it was. It's hard to expand on this thought without giving away some of the major plot reveals so I'll just leave that there. Overall, this is a genre film worth seeing as it effectively accomplishes what it sets out to do and will hopefully be a stepping stone for both the cast and crew to create bigger things down the road.
