Burnt - Movie Review

Burnt is a film by John Wells whose previous work includes The Company Men and August: Osage County. The cast for the movie includes Bradley Cooper. Sienna Miller, Daniel Brühl, Riccardo Scamarcio, Omar Sy, Emma Thompson, Uma Thurman, Sarah Greene and Alicia Vikander.

The Story:
In the culinary world, Adam Jones (Cooper) was something of a rock star having earned a two Michelin star rating while at one of the top restaurants in the world. In this highly competitive field, Jones succumbed to the excesses of fame and quickly fell to the depths of a drug filled pit that took him years to climb out of. Now back on the scene and ready to prove himself worthy of a coveted third Michelin star, Jones begins assembling a team that can help him achieve his goals of redemption and resurrection.

The Review:
This is one of those films that you have really high hopes for thanks to a wonderful cast and a director known for putting out quality work. The premise is pretty simple and nothing we haven't seen before so it's the quality of acting that really carries this picture and keeps it from being just another forgettable piece of film making. If you've seen Jon Favreau's Chef or Pixar's Ratatouille then you have a really good idea of what you can expect from this film although it doesn't nearly reach the heights that those two films achieve. There's really nothing wrong with the story, it just doesn't pack the emotional punch that I believe it was striving for.

The Verdict:
Burnt is a film I would recommend to people who are big fans of cooking and food in general as there is a ton of beautifully mouth watering imagery and a lot of the kitchen scenes are really fun to watch. Outside of that though, the film doesn't have a whole lot going for it other than some typically strong performances from Cooper, Sienna Miller, and Daniel Brühl. I was really hoping to love this movie but it fell short of that expectation and ended up being just a moderately likable and not very memorable film.
