Hello and welcome to the second installment of my Seattle Shorts Film Festival "Preview Reviews" which I will be releasing over the next couple weeks leading up to the actual film festival weekend. Each installment of this review series will feature a few of the short films that I have selected as my "TwoOhSix Picks" which can be seen by clicking HERE. The reviews you are about to read have been typed out immediately after watching each film so you are getting an honest and immediate reaction.
Breathe is a World War II drama from Poland that packs a lot into its five minute run time. Director Youssef Ouarrak fills every moment with tension and drama and ends up teaching you something about the war that you probably didn't know. This story could easily be made into a full length feature and I would love to see that happen at some point.
Tony Doupe and Cynthia Geary star in Signs Everywhere, a locally produced film shot in and around downtown Seattle that dives into emotional withdrawal, isolation, and how they can affect those around you. Director Julio Ramirez gives us an eye opening exploration of what can happen as we remove ourselves from the reality we live in by hiding behind virtual walls and psychological barriers. The concept of using cardboard signs similar to what panhandlers use to show each person's emotional state is a very clever device and ultimately helps to lead the main character right towards a redefining moment in his life.
Director Travis Champagne puts us all in the way back machine and takes us on a trip to 1950's Louisiana where Jimmy (Jonathan Bennett), a Hollywood movie star, is spending some time away from the bright lights and big city life. Of course, this is the perfect setting for unexpected romance and that's right where a waitress named Norma Jean (Jordy Lucas) comes in. The Out and Outs is a fun little throwback film and an homage to the classic days of movie making that we are likely to never see again.
Stay tuned for the next installment of my Seattle Shorts Film Festival "Preview Reviews" coming real soon! The Seattle Shorts Film Festival will be held at the SIFF Film Center in Seattle Washington on November 14th and 15th.
