The Night Before is a very unique take on the holiday comedy genre and was directed by Jonathan Levine who's previous efforts include Warm Bodies and All the Boys Love Mandy Lane. The movie stars Seth Rogan, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Anthony Mackie, Jillian Bell, Lizzy Caplan, Michael Shannon, Ilana Glazer, Tracy Morgan, Randall Park, Mindy Kaling, and Lorraine Toussaint.
The Story:
Ethan (Gordon-Levitt), Isaac (Rogen), and Chris (Mackey) have been best friends since high school and every year they have shared a night of Christmas time adventure. After ten years, they have decided to end the tradition and, thanks to some good fortune, they will be heading out to attend a super exclusive party they have only heard rumors about and wanted to attend for years.
The Review:
This is a really funny movie filled with alcohol, drugs, debauchery, and cameo appearances and fits right in with the type of films we have previously seen from Rogen and friends. While I wouldn't put this film among the all time classics, it should also find it's way into a lot of people's annual must-watch holiday movie lists and I can imagine there will be folks who start their own traditions based on the adventures these guys have. At times, the antics are a little over the top yet director Jonathan Levine never lets it completely fall off the rails and you really get the sense that everyone involved had a great time making this movie.
The Verdict:
The Night Before will most likely become that one holiday movie you watch every year while having a few drinks and/or getting a little high. While I'm not advocating any illegal activity, it would be a crime not to check this movie out as will definitely enhance your holiday cheer...or it will make you question everything you've ever known about that most wonderful time of the year.
