Monster Hunt - Movie Review

Monster Hunt is a Chinese fantasy film directed by Raman Hui and is currently playing in Seattle at the AMC Pacific Place 11 theater. The movie stars Baihe Bai, Boran Jing, Wu Jiang, Elaine Jin, Wallace Chung, Eric Tsang, Sandra Kwan Yue Ng, Wei Tang, and Chen Yao.

The Story:
This is an ancient world where humans and monsters have been living not so peacefully for a very long time. As the monster queen is being hunted down by both rival monsters and human hunters, she crosses paths with a young man named Song Tianyin (Jing) and huntress Huo Xiaolan (Bai). Now, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance, they must protect a newborn monster from attacks by just about everyone.

The Review:
From what I understand, this movie broke box office records in China, although under some controversy, so I was very interested in seeing what it was all about. Turns out it's a fun and family friendly action fantasy that, to me, is mildly entertaining but ultimately just an okay film. There are some really fun moments, especially the interactions between Baihe Bai and Boran Jing, but too much of the film is set back by how cartoonish the monsters are.

The Verdict:
Monster Hunt is a Chinese fantasy film that the whole family can enjoy, I guess as long as that family speaks Mandarin and/or will read subtitles through the whole movie. I'm not sure if it's deserving of any all time box office records but it is a reasonably entertaining film.
