The 5th Wave - Movie Review

The 5th Wave is a film directed by J Blakeson and is based off of a young adult novel written by Rick Yancey. The film stars Chloƫ Grace Moretz, Nick Robinson, Ron Livingston, Maggie Siff, Zackary Arthur, Tony Revolori, Liev Schreiber, Maria Bello, Maika Monroe, and Alex Roe.

The Story:
Cassie Sullivan (Moretz) is an average teenager at an average high school on an average day. Everything about her average existence changes when a series of events referred to as waves are enacted by an invading alien force to wipe out the human race. Left with few options, Cassie sets off to find her little brother and do what she can to keep them safe.

The Review:
I'll tell you this right now. If you are a teenage girl and/or a fan of the book, you will get a kick out of this movie as it is definitely aimed to that very specific audience and really no one else. I've never read the book so I have no basis for comparison, I just hope it is a much better read than watching the movie was. The story is filled with so many plot holes and inconsistencies, I found myself shaking my head and laughing every few minutes at what was happening on screen. There is a love triangle that is so strange and awkward, you will cringe and then laugh some more at the silliness of it all. I guess you could say this is a really weak attempt at capitalizing on what The Hunger Games does so well. I wanted to like the movie because I am a fan of Chloƫ Grace Moretz, but there really isn't much of anything to root for at all.
