The Confirmation is a film produced, written, and directed by Bob Nelson who was a staple on Almost Live, a Seattle sketch comedy show. The movie features acting performances by Clive Owen, Maria Bello, Jaeden Lieberher, Patton Oswalt, Stephen Tobolowsky, Tim Blake Nelson, Robert Forster, and Matthew Modine.
The Story:
Walt (Owen) is a man down on his luck in a small town with few opportunities. When his ex wife Bonnie (Bello) leaves their son Anthony (Lieberher) with him for the weekend, his first thought is what trouble could they possibly get into. Of course these famous last words lead them on a mini adventure that includes thievery, drugs, guns, and poor decisions and it's up to Walt to make sure his son is safe while learning valuable lessons about each other and the world they live in.
The Review:
In 12013, Bob Nelson hit a high point in his career with his film Nebraska which earned a total of six Oscar nominations including best picture, direction, cinematography, original screenplay, actor, and supporting actress. Unfortunately, I never took the opportunity to see that film although I was very glad to have watched The Confirmation. The screenplay is a very well written dramatic effort with a few laughs mixed in to keep it from being too dreary and preachy. Clive Owen does a fin job in the lead role and pairs well with the young Jaeden Lieberher whose star is rising quickly with roles in films like St. Vincent and Midnight Special.
The Verdict:
I can confirm that The Confirmation is a solid entry in Bob Nelson's career as a film maker even if it doesn't match the prestige of his previous effort. While the movie's intent to entertain was a bit confusing at times, I was pleased with the end result and am happy to have seen it.
