The Witch (2016) - Movie Review

The Witch, a horror movie based off of 1600's New England folk tales, was written and directed by Robert Eggers. The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie, Harvey Scrimshaw, and Julian Richings.

This film has been advertised and hyped up as the "scariest movie in years" so, of course, the bar is set pretty high. While it is very dark, moody, and downright creepy, there was never one time where I felt scared in any way, shape, or form and this led to me being very unsatisfied with the entire experience. I will say the acting performance are pretty impressive with special mention going to Ralph Ineson who is outstanding as the God fearing father who becomes lost in a world where things begin to happen that he truly has no answers for.

As a horror movie, The Witch fails miserably. The whole time, I sat there waiting for something to happen and, when the credits began to roll, I was left with nothing but disappointment. As a dark, slow, creepy, and generally uninteresting journey into religion and folk lore, I suppose it was decent. When I asked a friend of mine what she thought of the movie, her response was: "It was stupid". I think that about sums it up.
