2016 Emerald City Comicon: Day Two - ECCC Coverage

Day two of my 2016 Emerald City Comicon adventure can definitely be considered a success as I got to do everything I wanted to and even saw a few friends along the way. This was a much more important day for panels and will probably be the biggest out of the four day weekend as my focus turns to cosplay photos and potential shopping.

My day started with the "Dark Horse Comics and Twentieth Century Fox: A Relationship Spanning Universes" panel where members of Dark Horse Comics creative team including TwoOhSix Artist Pick Faith Erin Hicks along with Joshua Izzo, director of licensing at Twentieth Century Fox. Ms. hicks was on hand to discuss her involvement in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic and she had a great story about Joss Whedon and how involved he is in the creative process as executive producer.

The next panel I attended was the "One-on-One Discussion with Ashley Eckstein, Voice of Ahsoka Tano" which featured a discussion with Ashley Eckstein about her work on the Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels character. She had a lot of great insight including her thoughts on Ahsoka's fate and how it was left up in the air after the last episode of Rebels. The video below starts with a video showing Ahsoka's journey and then some of Ashley's thoughts on the character. if you have not watched Rebels you may want to avoid so you can stay spoiler free.

After that panel was over, I headed straight to the main hall to see The Punisher himself Mr. Jon Bernthal who turned out to be really entertaining and had a lot of great insight about Daredevil, The Walking Dead, and films he has worked on like Fury, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Sicario. When asked about his role as Frank Castle aka The Punisher, whose motivation for revenge is drawn out by the loss of his wife and kids, Bernthal noted that he would not have been able to play the role properly if he himself did not have a wife and kids to care for which gave him an understanding of what Castle had lost.

When asked about where he drew inspiration from for playing Frank Castle, Bernthal specifically noted the "Punisher MAX" comic book series which featured a more realistic and hard edged version of the character than has ever been seen before. He also talked about how one of the main differences between filming a movie versus a TV show is the lack of time to prepare, especially for action scenes. For a movie, actors would train for months whereas for a TV show, they would only have a few days to get ready, even for the really intense fight scenes that you see on shows like Daredevil and The Walking Dead.

After some wandering around the show floor and a break for some food, it was time to head back to the main hall to see another star of Daredevil, Elden Hanson aka Foggy Nelson. Hanson was in rare form as he talked about growing up as an actor with roles in The Mighty Ducks movies on up to his more recent work in films like The Butterfly Effect and the final two installments of The Hunger Games series. However, he did note that the villains in Daredevil are scary and very effective because they are written as real people who we can actually understand rather than just one sided evil characters.

Hanson was asked about filming the extensive sewer scenes in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 and he explained how, what is a very intense and scary scene in the movie, was actually hilarious to film because of all the guys in green unitards with dots all over them. When asked which Marvel movie he would like to be in as Foggy Nelson, Hanson became very excited about the possibility of being in a Guardians of the Galaxy movie: "I don't know how that would happen, but it would be dope!"

Finally, I will leave you with a collection of photos that were taken over the course of the day. There were so many cool costumes, I wish I could have taken photos of everyone!
