"From the visionary minds of Key and Peele" comes Keanu, a movie about two men who have lost a cat and must enter the world of gangs and drugs to find him. This action packed comedy stars Jordan Peele, Keegan-Michael Key, Tiffany Haddish, Method Man, Darrell Britt-Gibson, Jason Mitchell, Luis Guzmán, Nia Long, and Will Forte.
The Review:
All you really need to know about the story is that Key and Peele play two regular guys who need to pretend they are hard core gangsters in an attempt to get their stolen kitten back and this is where the vast majority of the comedy comes from. The whole movie is a not so subtle nod to John Wick, a recent shoot em up thriller where Keanu Reeves plays an assassin, and there are plenty of opportunities for bullets to fly and random gang members to get knocked off in said hail of bullets. This movie could have been really bad in so many different ways, but it somehow manages to be entertaining from start to finish.
I really thought the story was going to lose steam quickly as it seemed like it could be perfect example of those comedies where all the funny parts are in the trailer. While Key and Peele are their usual funny selves, it was very interesting to watch the audience get totally absorbed by all the kitten cuteness any time one of the feline actors who portrayed Keanu was on the screen which is especially impressive when you think how hard it must have been to get them to do anything at all. They are cats, after all. As far as the rest of the cast, it was a nice surprise to see Method Man in a prominent role and Tiffany Haddish was especially good as Meth's right hand woman.
The Verdict:
Keanu is a fun movie that is equal parts cute kitty comedy, action thriller, and gang banger hood movie. Somehow it all works, doesn't get corny, and is a genuinely funny movie. Go ahead and watch the trailer, it doesn't spoil anything and it pretty much shows you what you are getting into.
