Year after year, GeekGirlCon just gets bigger and better while keeping the focus on the fans and allowing for one of the friendliest, most welcoming conventions around. This year's festivities again took place at Seattle's Washington State Convention Center and featured more panels, more guests, and an expanded exhibitor floor, all of which meant more fun for all the fans.
My experience at this year's GeekGirlCon consisted of seeing as much as I could on Sunday, the final day of the convention. From the moment I walked in, I could actually feel all the fun being had by everyone and there was so much to see from the seemingly endless list of panels to the amazing variety of costumes being worn by kids, adults, and everyone in between. As I walked by a group of young women, one of them said something that, to me, pretty much defines the GGC experience: "I'm overwhelmed, there's so much creativity here!"
Examples of that creativity were on display all over the show floor and a few of the vendors in particular caught my eye so I stopped and chatted with them for a bit. Melanie Ujimori had come up from Portland for her first GGC adventure and expressed how much fun the weekend was and definitely a worthwhile experience. Another first timer, Nubia Ohare has been hitting the west coast convention scene for some time and really loved the unique experience that GGC provides. Finally, the Jayme Twins, whose first ever convention experience was last year's GeekGirlCon, loved having the opportunity to share they unique artwork like their phenomenal "Darkroom Series" of retro style sketches
The one panel I was able to attend was, of course, a Star Wars themed discussion that focused on how the people in charge of creating the current slate of films has made strides in both diversity and inclusion yet still have a long way to go. Tricia Barr of fangirlblog.com moderated a panel that included Star Wars experts @tspofnutmeg, @kelly_knox, and @LisaGranshaw who each brought their own unique perspective to the conversation.
GeekGirlCon celebrates and honors the legacy of women contributing to science and technology; comics, arts, and literature; and game play and game design by connecting geeky women worldwide and creating community to foster continued growth of women in geek culture through events.
