The Review:
The original film, also directed by James Wan. has to be one of the best horror movies of the last decade so a sequel would be highly anticipated for sure. Chad Hayes and Carey Hayes also returned as writers for this second installment which goes a long way towards a seamless transition and consistency within the overall world being built. It's really interesting so see bits and pieces from the original film as well as Annabelle affecting this story and and the characters inhabiting it. That being said, the creative team has still managed to come up with a story that truly stands on its own and is nearly as intense and frightening as the original.

Without Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, this movie, and the franchise, would be nowhere the level of quality and depth as it is with them. Both are extremely talented actors and I believe they are a perfect match for the people they portray. They are just as believable as a ghost busting duo as they are as a loving and caring couple and their ghastly adventures, such as they are, seem much more real and textured with them involved. Don't get me wrong, this is still a horror movie that focuses on chills and scares, but it's the quality of the cast working with a well written story that puts it a step or two ahead of the genre.

The Verdict:
The Conjuring 2 isn't just a good horror movie, it's a good movie and, like it's predecessor, should be counted among the best of its genre. Vera Farmiga is excellent as she always is and the depths of her character are just as important to the film as the moments that make you jump out of your seat.
