The Review:
After seeing what Fede Alvarez did with his take on the Evil Dead franchise, I was pretty excited to see what his next project would be and the idea for this film certainly caught my attention. While I enjoyed the movie, I have to say there is one thing that absolutely killed the experience for me. The first couple minutes of the film shows something that happens late in the story and totally kills all the suspense of who survives and if anyone gets out of the house before it's over. This seems to be a common film making technique and, while I normally find it mildly annoying, this time around it was just a killer for me. That being said, the rest of the film was very well put together and would have been a really intense experience if not for those first couple minutes.
If Stephen Lang hasn't been cast as a horror movie villain before this movie, then something has been seriously wrong with Hollywood casting up until now. He's played a lot of different roles over the years, the most iconic of which being as Colonel Quaritch in Avatar, but this might be the one that ends up defining his career. Sure, this movie may have had nothing more than mild success at the box office, but I get the feeling it may just be the first of a long running franchise where "The Blind Man" takes on a steady stream of unsuspecting characters. He is more than sufficiently creepy and has a presence that just scares the crap out of you so yeah, this role could definitely have some legs.
The Verdict:
Don't Breathe is a good horror movie that is ruined by unnecessary flash forward spoilers at the very beginning. If you are a fan of the genre, you should see this movie, just skip the first few minutes and you'll be fine.
