Sing - Movie Review

The Movie: Sing

The Director: Christophe Lourdelet and Garth Jennings

The Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane, Scarlett Johansson, John C. Reilly, Taron Egerton, Tori Kelly, Jennifer Saunders, Jennifer Hudson, Nick Kroll, and Nick Offerman.

The Story: In a modern civilization populated by animals, a koala struggles to keep his theater, and his father's dreams, alive. To keep from getting shut down, he puts on a singing competition that turns out to be much more than anyone bargained for.

The Review:
Illumination Entertainment, in partnership with Universal Studios, has been responsible for films like Despicable Me, Minions, and The Lorax so they are well versed in putting together successful animated feature films. The directing team of Christophe Lourdelet and Garth Jennings, who also write the story, keep things well balanced and moving along nicely considering all the characters whose backstories need to be told and fleshed out. The story itself is very lighthearted and fun with an emphasis on humor and action which keeps things moving along nicely.

When I saw the film, there were several young kids in the audience and they were all thoroughly entertained and engaged with both the story and characters. While none of the animals in the film will become classic icons of animated cinema, they were all well thought out and the voice talent behind them worked nicely with the mix of dialog and singing. While Matthew McConaughey is the star of the show, I felt that Tori Kelly and Taron Egerton created the most likable and appealing characters with their voice work. Each have moments that are really touching and very human, I guess you could say, and both add a lot to what could have been very minor and generic characters.

The Verdict:
Sing is a good movie and a solid effort although it doesn't do anything to stand out from the pack in a very competitive genre. Kids will like the story and the humor making this a safe bet for a family night out at the movies. I did not see the movie in 3D so not able to comment about the added feature.
