The Documentary: I Am Not Your Negro
The Director: Raoul Peck
The Story: "Writer James Baldwin tells the story of race in modern America with his unfinished novel, Remember This House." - IMDB.com
The Review:
To be honest, I don't really know a whole lot about James Baldwin so I was very interested in learning about one of the more influential authors and activists of his generation. Raoul Peck has adapted Baldwin's unfinished novel by carefully piecing together a selection of video clips and photographs that feature interviews, speeches, and various other moments from his life. Samuel L. Jackson provides the narrative for the film using Baldwin's own words from the unfinished novel while Baldwin himself drives his points home in the various video clips.
The Verdict:
Raoul Peck's documentary definitely comes across more educational than it does emotional or dramatic although I didn't really see this as a problem. This was a great way to get to know the man who may not have been as well known as Malcolm, Medgar, or Martin, but had just as much impact on their generation's history and culture.
I Am Not Your Negro will be playing at the SIFF Cinema Egyptian in downtown Seattle from February 3rd through the 15th as well as the Cinemark Lincoln Square Cinemas in Bellevue.
