The Review:
The Underworld franchise has always been reasonably entertaining to watch and a consistently enjoyable way to kill a couple of hours. Kate Beckinsale, as Selene, has been, other than one mistake of a movie, the centerpiece and focus of the series and is pretty much the main reason why it's worth watching in the first place. Watching her as a bad ass, half vampire super soldier is always a treat and there is never any shortage of her taking down a couple dozen generic bad guys whether it be vampires, humans, or lycan aka werewolves.
Over time, the world these characters live in has expanded to the point where it's now time for a massive showdown between several supernatural super powers with Selene, as always, right in the middle of it all. One thing I didn't realize while watching the film was that director Anna Foerster was making her feature film debut and, based on the result, I would have had a hard time believing it. The look and scale of the film is bigger than any of it's predecessors and the story, which is filled with a ton of characters to keep track of, unfolds seamlessly from beginning to end. That's not to say that this is any type of Oscar caliber effort, I mean, it is Underworld, but she does a great job with the material she is given to start off with.
The Verdict:
Underworld: Blood Wars is a worthy entry into the franchise even if it doesn't really do much to stand out or set itself apart. Kate Beckinsale is clearly the star of the show and she does her best to make sure the audience has a bloody good time.
