The Review:
Director Agnieszka Smoczynska, for her first feature film, has created a really fun, stylish, and honestly quite odd fairy tale that is quite dark in tone yet manages to maintain a whimsical, fairytale quality that ends up being very endearing. It's almost like there is an inside joke that the entire cast and crew is in on as they tell their story with a wink and a nod that lets you know not to take any of it too seriously.
There's not really much to say about the acting other than everyone in the cast really goes all in with the playful style and tongue in cheek mentality that makes this such a fun watch. Everyone seems like they are having a great time with how gratuitous the whole thing is and the looks on their faces suggest they might break into laughter at any moment. Stylistically, the imagery is very bold and colorful, especially during the bar scenes where the band is doing their thing. Being a true musical, there are songs throughout the movie, but it's the band performances that really steal the show.
The Verdict:
Yes, there are mermaids and there is a love story at its core, but this is definitely not your typical fairy tale with a patented happy ending. If you're into Polish mermaid new wave rock operas that are a dark, twisted, and bloody good time, then The Lure is definitely the film for you.
