The Movie: Tommy's Honour
The Director: Jason Connery
The Cast: Jack Lowden, Peter Mullan, Ophelia Lovibond, Therese Bradley, Sam Neill, Peter Ferdinando
The Story: This is the story of Tommy Morris, the world's first golf prodigy, and his father who revolutionized the game of golf in the late 1800's.
The Review:
If you are a fan of golf and the history behind it, you have most likely heard the name Tom Morris and you may even have a pretty good idea of what a profound impact both the father and son had on the sport during their time. The rest of you (this is where I fit in) most likely have no idea who these men are. Director Jason Connery, who just so happens to be the son of the one and only Mr. Sean Connery, has put together a dramatic feature that tells the story of these two men as they literally transformed the sport of golf from a humble Scottish past time to a sporting sensation that swept across Europe and eventually the world. Jack Lowden does a great job handling the endless energy and cocky demeanor of young Tommy Morris while Peter Mullan portrays the elder Morris in an appropriately proud and mature manner.
The Verdict:
Tommy's Honour does a solid job at honoring two of modern day golf's founding fathers, or in this case, father and son. While the story was interesting, it just wasn't told in a very engaging way and, if not for the performances from the lead actors, it would have been pretty dull, overly long, and a bit repetitive. Basically, the movie is as interesting as golf.
