The Movie: Entanglement
The Director: Jason James
The Cast: Thomas Middleditch, Jess Weixler, Nicole LaPlaca, Diana Bang, Johannah Newmarch
The Story: While recovering from a suicide attempt, Ben Layton accidentally falls in love with a girl who was very nearly, almost his sister - and then things start to get weird.
The Review:
"And then things start to get weird." That is about as fitting of a tag line as you could ever come up with for this film. You could insert the phrase at any point of this story, no matter how weird it already is up to that point, and it works because things just keep getting weirder. Fortunately, director Jason James knows exactly what to do with all the weirdness as he is able to oh so subtly wrap it around some pretty serious subject matter and comes away with an almost fairy tale like story of loss and redemption.
In the lead role for the film, we get Thomas Middleditch, who is most recognizable for his ongoing role in HBO's Silicon Valley TV series, as well as supporting performances from Jess Weixler (The Good Wife) and Diana Bang (The Interview). As the story unfolds and more secrets are revealed, Middleditch digs deeper and deeper into his bag of tricks and comes away with a very affecting performance and one that really lets you get into the head of someone who is suffering from some really intense mental and emotional issues.
The Verdict:
At face value, you might get the impression that Entanglement is going to be a fairly run of the mill romantic comedy, but it is so much more than that and never really travels down the same old, expected path. The story is heavy on originality, has heaps of heart, and turns out to be a surprisingly emotional and entertaining journey through one man's struggle with deciphering which reality is the one he is actually living.
