The Review:
NASA's space program has always been a particular point of interest for me although I can honestly say I really don't know much about the Voyager mission other than the basic stuff that everyone knows. Writer and director Emer Reynolds has gone to great lengths to create two hours of in depth interviews and stunning imagery while painting an intimate portrait of what it took to pull off what many would call the most important achievement in the history of mankind.
Just about every documentary ever made is going to have its fair share of talking heads, you know, the people sitting in front of the camera talking about their experience with whatever the subject matter is. While this film has plenty of those moments, the sheer enthusiasm coming from each person, most were part of the original mission team, helps to show the amount of heart and effort that went into making this seemingly impossible mission such an overwhelming success. Combining these interview pieces with footage of everything from the construction of the two Voyager ships to a virtual library of images from the mission itself goes a long way to providing an unprecedented level of access to a very important piece of American history.
The Verdict:
The Farthest is the closest you will ever get to being a part of the team that sent two tiny ships on a voyage of discovery that has literally changed how we view our place among the stars. Emer Reynolds does a fantastic job of capturing the sense of wonder and adventure that came with pulling off this historic achievement. The only thing keeping this from being a complete documentary is the fact that the mission is itself is actually still going as both Voyager 1 and 2 continue their journeys into the far reaches of outer space.
