Over the course of nearly four weeks, the Seattle International Film Festival will feature 400 films from around the world and, since it would be physically impossible to watch them all, I am giving you a starting point with this list of the films that I am most looking forward to watching. The entire roster of films comes from 80 different countries and features 36 world premieres and 20 US premieres screening at venues all around the greater Seattle area.
To help make things easier, I have created four categories and each category gets its very own post.
Yes, Sam Elliott will be live and in person right here in Seattle as he re-teams with director Brett Haley (I’ll See You in My Dreams) in a tailor-made showcase role. The man with the amazing vocal chords appropriately plays "an aging Western actor and “sad old pothead” whose cancer diagnosis leads him to re-examine his past, contemplate his legacy, and maybe make a few new friends." Director Brett Haley will also be in attendance for this special afternoon event.
A white sheet wearing ghost, played by Academy Award winner Casey Affleck (The Finest Hours) returns to console his wife, played by Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), only to find himself passively watching the love he knew slowly slip away in an unforgettable meditation on love and grief from David Lowery (Ain't Them Bodies Saints). I'm definitely looking forward to seeing Affleck and Mara team up again!
"After Wildlife officer Cory Lambert (Jeremy Renner) discovers the body of an 18-year-old woman in the frigid Wyoming wilderness, an FBI agent enlists him to help track the killer. As their search leads them deeper into the woodlands and back country towns, they slowly descend into a different kind of unknown territory." Jon Bernthal, recently known as the Punisher within the Marvel Netflix roster of shows, has a role in the film and Elizabeth Olson once again teams up with Renner, her Avengers co star. Taylor Sheridan, the film's director, has had recent success with Hell or High Water.
Just watch the trailer and tell me this might just be the comedy smash hit of the year. "Aubrey Plaza, Alison Brie, and Kate Micucci star as a group of hilariously profane and emotionally unstable nuns.
"The director and star of Obvious Child reunite for this uproarious slice-of- life story about two sisters (Jenny Slate and breakout star Abby Quinn) in pre-cell-phone 1990's Manhattan who discover that their father is having an affair, and conspire to expose him." Jenny Slate was very impressive in Gifted, a recent collaboration with Chris Evans, and her star is definitely on the rise. John Turturro, Finn Wittrock, and Jay Duplass also have roles in the film.
"Haley Lu Richardson and John Cho star as two strangers who meet in Columbus, Indiana, a town with a surprising number of modernist architectural landmarks, and form an intimate bond in this sweet and subtle drama, a Midwest Before Sunrise by way of Yasujiro Ozu." It will be very interesting to see Cho in a role like this after playing iconic characters in films like Harold and Kumar and the recent Star Trek movies.
