The Review:
Zombies, strippers, blood, and baseball bats. What more could you want from a movie, right?! Peelers has been tearing up the film festival scene for quite some time and has been receiving a lot of praise so I figured I might as well check it out. Sure, we have seen zombie strip club movies before but this sub genre seems to have a never ending supply of gratuitously fun stories to tell. Director Sevé Schelenz fills his film with everything you would want to see and pulls no punches when it comes to showing off his roster of beautiful women, a seemingly unstoppable zombie horde, and buckets of bloody, skull bashing violence.
While this Canadian independent picture may not have all the bells and whistles that its big budget counterparts may be able to throw at you, it makes up for that by focusing on fun and giving the audience exactly what it wants to see. The movie is set in a strip club so of course there is going to be gratuitous nudity and, right from the opening credits, Schelenz gives the female members of his cast every opportunity to display their talents. There is also plenty of action, blood, and gore to go around with lead actress Wren Walker front and center for all the best parts.
Walker has appeared in short films and TV shows, but this is her first time headlining a feature film and you could say she takes that first pitch in the big leagues and hits it right out of the park. She is completely believable as a former ball player, a former stripper, a business owner, and most importantly as a kick ass zombie destroying power hitter. I really hope she keeps working within the world of horror films as she could easily become one of the genre's starting rotation of top notch talent.
The Verdict:
Peelers hits a grand slam with a double header sized dose of gratuitous gore and indulgent indecencies. Fans of the genre are definitely going to want to give this movie a shot.
Peelers will be available on DVD and Blu Ray in the U.S. on July 4th and On Demand in Canada on July 11th. Check it out!
