The Movie: Fish Bones
The Director: Joanne Mony Park
The Cast: Joony Kim, Cristina Tamez-Rodriguez, Christopher Kim, Borah Ahn
The Story: During winter break, a young woman struggles with her sexuality as she's torn between family expectations and her own desires.
The Review:
For her first feature film, writer and director Joanne Mony Park uses some interesting techniques to come up with a very raw and engaging story. Splitting the narrative into small sections and jumbling up the timeline works nicely to help understand where each of the two main characters are coming from and Park's use of music, especially at the beginning of the film, really sets the tone for the narrative.
In the lead roles, Joony Kim and Cristina Tamez-Rodriguez aka Cris Gris work really well together and their chemistry is pretty evident on screen. The run time is pretty efficient at just under 90 minutes which keeps things moving along nicely although the story would have benefited from a little more time being spent on each of the two families, especially for Hana. The family dynamics involving her mom and her brother could have warranted a movie in and of itself although I can see why Park wanted to keep things a little more streamlined.
Ultimately, the film works very well as is and shows off a lot of the talents Park has as an up and coming director. Fish Bones is a beautiful story about love and sexuality and is a great starting point for what should be a very promising career.
