Proud Mary - Movie Review

The Movie: Proud Mary

The Director: Babak Najafi

The Cast: Taraji P. Henson, Billy Brown, Jahi Di'Allo Winston

The Story: Mary is a hit woman working for an organized crime family in Boston, whose life is completely turned around when she meets a young boy whose path she crosses when a professional hit goes bad.

The Review:
At face value, Proud Mary looks like another entry into the expanding "Gun-Fu" genre that has been popularized in the states by the John Wick films and Charlize Theron's Atomic Blonde. The movie also has elements of the classic 70's "blaxploitation" films and the title character is a pretty obvious take on Pam Grier's iconic characters from that era. What it ends up being is a pretty straight forward, paint by numbers action movie that mainly stays afloat thanks to the star power and charisma of lead actress Taraji P. Henson.

The story is predictable and reminds me of run of the mill 80's crime dramas that never had much in the way of originality to begin with. The relationships between characters are stale, contrived, and don't make much sense. If you are a fan of Ms. Henson, you will enjoy this movie but otherwise, there's really not much going on here that we haven't seen before.
