The Review:
The poster says "Bruce is back." I wasn't aware that he ever left although I suppose they are referring to him coming back to the guns blazing, action thriller genre. I will tell you this is no Die Hard by any stretch of the imagination. The script that Joe Carnahan has written is based off the original film that starred Charles Bronson while he was at his highest level of bad-ass-edness. Yes, that is now a word. Kind of.
Eli Roth, who is probably most known for directing the hardcore horror movie Hostel or maybe for portraying the fearsome "Jew Bear" in Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, adds his special flair for showing the gory details of gun shot wounds, stabbings, necks breaking, and all other forms of blood splattering mayhem into this movie. There aren't many of these moments, but Roth goes all in whenever he needs to and the results will cause more than a few gasps from the audience.
I'm not sure if it's really necessary to talk about the acting in this movie. Bruce is Bruce which is perfectly acceptable and everyone else is basically just along for the ride. I will say that Vincent D'Onofrio is excellent as he always is, he just brings so much personality to the character even though it's a relatively minor role. Camilla Morrone is also a highlight of the film, especially since I had no idea who she was. I hope to see more of her and in larger roles in the near future.
The Verdict:
Death Wish is exactly the movie you are expecting although maybe with a little less action than you are hoping for. Fans of Bruce Willis will love watching him shooting up all the bad guys which is pretty much what he has been known for over the years.
