The Movie: Thoroughbreds
The Director: Cory Finley
The Cast: Olivia Cooke, Anya Taylor-Joy, Anton Yelchin
The Story: Two upper-class teenage girls in suburban Connecticut rekindle their unlikely friendship after years of growing apart. Together, they hatch a plan to solve both of their problems-no matter what the cost.
The Review:
Thoroughbreds tries to be edgy and smart, but for me it just came across as snarky and uninteresting. The movie tries way to hard to be the cool kid on the block and fails because it comes across as manufactured and recycled. Olivia Cooke and Anya Taylor-Joy could have been something really special together but they aren't given anything to work with. Each scene is basically the same thing over and over again with no real progression of character or development of relationship.
Overall, the story is pretty basic and doesn't do anything remotely interesting. It was nice to be able to see Anton Yelchin again as he reminds us why we will be missing his talents and personality so much. For Cory Finley, this was a decent first effort, but with what he had to work with, it could have been so much more.
