The Review:
If you're looking for a science fiction film that will blow you mind then look no further. Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have created a mind bending genre film that had me in awe of how smart, different, and entertaining it is. Seriously, this movie is a trip. I put it in a category alongside movie like Ex Machina, Colossal, and Arrival when it comes to originality in story telling.
While I knew the movie fit into the science fiction genre, I really had no idea what to expect or how it would fit into that landscape, but when they finally let you in on the big secret, my mind was blown. and then the movie just got better from there. I was about to make another comparison but it would give away some of the secrets of the movie so I have to be careful and step away from the keyboard for a moment. In this case, the less you know...
The directors also play the two lead roles who are brothers that don't always get along but they do everything they can to protect each other when stuff gets real. They play their characters in a pretty straight forward fashion and, as a matter of fact, the entire cast is really just sort of there with none of them really standing out. I feel like this was actually intentional because the real entertainment comes from what the characters end up going through more than who they are.
The Verdict:
The Endless is endlessly entertaining. Science fiction fans will love it for the deep dive and casual movie fans will appreciate how well thought out the story is. Film makers around the world, please make more movie like this.
