A Rough Draft (Chernovik) - SIFF 2018 Movie Review

The Movie: A Rough Draft (Chernovik)

The Director: Sergey Mokritskiy

The Cast: Nikita Volkov, Severija Janusauskaite, Vilen Babichev, Olga Borovskaya, Oleg Feoktistov

The Story: A video game designer is stripped of his identity and recruited by a mysterious force to be the gatekeeper of a multi-dimensional portal.

The Review:
Wow, what a fun and entertaining movie this turned out to be. This is the type of genre gem I love finding at film festivals. The reality bending story has elements of science fiction and fantasy with a lot of The Matrix thrown in for good measure. It's really hard to label this movie even when it comes to the production values. At times, it is a big budget blockbuster with amazing special effects and, at other times, it looks like low budget DIY film making but somehow all of it works really well.

What I really love about the story is how it haphazardly moves forward without excessive explanation and it dares you to follow along during some really weird twists and turns. If you start thinking about the details, you'll get frustrated at the lack of logic or linear story telling but that's really not the point, you're just supposed to ride along as the adventure unfolds.

The Verdict:
A Rough Draft is a fun, bold adventure that is a perplexing pleasure to watch. The world, or worlds, created by the creative team open doors to a potential trilogy or series of films and, if they take shape, I will be there to watch.

A Rough Draft is an official selection of the 2018 Seattle International Film Festival.
