Tag (2018) - Movie Review

The Movie: Tag

The Director: Jeff Tomsic

The Cast: Jeremy Renner, Ed Helms, Jake Johnson, Jon Hamm, Annabelle Wallis, Isla Fisher, Hannibal Burress, Nora Dunn, Steve Berg, Leslie Bibb, Rashida Jones, LilRel Howery

The Story: A small group of former classmates organize an elaborate, annual game of tag that requires some to travel all over the country.

The Review:
Based on a true story, Jeff Tomsic takes a ton of liberties with the story and comes up with a really fun, non stop ensemble comedy. It has a very similar feeling to The Hangover with it's group of life long friends (Ed Helms appearing in both groups) experiencing the adventure of a lifetime although I wouldn't necessarily rank it up there at the same iconic status that movie achieved. What I like most about the movie is the pacing as it never slows down and keeps the gags coming all the way through to the end. It also never feels too over the top and manages to maintain that very fine line of stylized comedy without falling into absurdity.

It was really fun to see Jeremy Renner take a break from the blockbuster action films he has become known for by delivering a very strong comedic performance. It's a bit ironic though how his action hero reputation actually enhances the character he plays in this movie who is the one member of the group who has never been tagged which is mostly due to his impressive athletic ability and superior intellect. The rest of the roster brings their patented personalities to the table, which is a good thing, and Isla Fisher is funnier than ever with a performance that is just freaking hilarious.

The Verdict:
Tag is a really fun movie to watch. Go see it.
