The Movie: Golden Job / 黄金兄弟
The Director: Chin Ka Lok
The Cast: Ekin Cheng, Jordan Chan, Michael Tse, Chin Ka Lok, Jerry Lamb, Eric Tsang
The Story: A group of mercenaries come together to pull of an epic heist.
The Movie:
This movie is a revival of Young and Dangerous, a 1990's Chinese action movie franchise, which was an adaptation of a popular comic book series called Teddy Boy. The five cast members who starred in those movies as a group of self proclaimed brothers are all back together so anyone who was a fan of the original films will get a huge nostalgia kick from watching this movie. The director updates the style of the movie from 90' martial arts action to more of a Fast and Furious vibe with slick visuals, crazy car chases, and lots of explosions although without the mega sized budget that franchise enjoys.
The story is very fast paced and covers several years worth of time including flash backs to the days of when the group first came together so if you need a bathroom break, choose your moment wisely and make it fast. I really liked how, even with flashbacks in place, there wasn't a ton of over explaining everything that was happening and who everyone was, the exposition all fits nicely into the flow of the story. Meanwhile, there is so much action during the tight 90 minute run time, you don't even really have time to care.
The Verdict:
Golden Job is a fun, fast paced action spectacle that will satisfy current movie goers while also bringing back fond memories for fans of the original series. I would actually like to see more from this group so hopefully this installment is successful enough to allow the film makers to give it another go.
